They work with physicians and other medicine members. The athletic trainer specializes in wound prevention, evaluation and immediate cure of the injuries.

The athletic trainers are engaged in schools, colleges and sports medicine clinics. They are required to complete courses like physical therapy. You should not forget that most of them are from sports background. After playing at various levels they might decide that physical therapy is best for them. They are just required to do a course related to physical therapy.

They do not find any problem in getting admissions to these courses because as a sportsman their seat is reserved for these courses if they have played at national level. They might be from basket ball and would become an athletic trainer related to basket ball but as far as the course is concerned they are taught about all the sports.
