Medical transcription is a very demanding career. The job vacancy in this field was around 98000 in 2006 and is supposed to go up to 112000 up till 2016.

The first question arises what a medical transcription really is? A Medical Transcriptionist manages the record of the patient for future use. This is a very challenging job and even a slight mistake can be very dangerous. Let us suppose that a person is suffering from Neural Disease and he is asked to take a medicine of power 20-mg.after some period of time when he comes again to the hospital the record shows the medicine as 10 mg. This position can be fatal. In fact managing a medical record is a very challenging task.  A Medical Transcriptionist should be up to it with sincerity.

Now the question arises how a Medical Transcriptionist works? A MT works with the help of various editors like MS office. Today voice recognition system (VRS) is used and digital recording is preferred. Gone are those days when Typewriter and electric typewriters were used. Now all the works are done on computers.

History of medical Transcriber:
History of transcriber goes to late 1960 when first transcription in the form of MRP was come into existence. Now transcription has also found its place in the medical world. A medical transcriber keeps the record in the same way as in case of MRP.

What to do to become a Medical Transcriptionist?
A high school degree is required or GED and 1 or 2 years experience is preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology is very helpful. Basic office computer and eye hand coordination is required. Some more are

  • Good typing speed
  • Good record maintaining habit.
  • Good verbal and written skill.
  • And so on.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Keeps record of patient’s identity.
  • Maintain proper record.
  • Perform quality assurance check.
  • Maintains disk and disk backups.
  • Provides correct record when required.

And so on.
Apart from this MT has to perform various miscellaneous jobs.

Job Opportunities for MT is great. It was 98000 in the year 2006 and is expected to go up to 112000 till 2016.

Salary package:
According to a survey carried out by American association of medical transcriber is $31000. The highest payee earn up to 18$ per hour whereas lowest payee earns about 9$ per hour. A vastly experienced transcriber can earn up to $30 to $ 40 per hour. Transcribers can earn a lot if they have their own business and are willing to earn from home. They can earn up to $50,000.
